One of the program themes for Worship next summer will be topics involving the environment. In discussing possible selections for the Big Read in the Education Committee meetings, the book The Living Great Lakes by Jerry Dennis came highly recommended. In honor of one of next year’s themes, and the desire for a good regional read, The Living Great Lakes was selected as the 2018 Bay View Big Read. This personal journey on the Great Lakes with its historical and adventurous narrative will make you appreciate, respect, understand, and know the waters and the history of the surrounding areas even more.
The Living Great Lakes author, Jerry Dennis, grew up in northern Michigan and for more than thirty years has earned his living writing about nature and the outdoors. His many books, including The Living Great Lakes, The Windward Shore, It’s Raining Frogs and Fishes, and, most recently, A Walk in the Animal Kingdom, have appeared on national bestseller lists, have been translated into six languages, and are taught in colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. Among the honors he has received are the Michigan Author of the Year Award, the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award, The Great Lakes Culture Award, and four Best Book of the Year awards from the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Jerry lives with his wife, Gail Dennis, on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City.
As our guest author, Dennis will speak to Bay View members only on July 18 from 3:30-4:30 in Evelyn Hall. A presentation open to the public will be held in Voorhies Hall from 7:30-8:30 on July 19. Cost is $10 advanced ticket sales and $15 at the door. Dennis is looking forward to speaking in Bay View. You may visit him at www.jerrydennis.net.
